Show Notes – ATO Tax Stats

In this week’s episode, the Trio uncover key insights from the just-released 2022–23 ATO Tax Stats.

From personal income and super balances to rental property trends and tax quirks, this data-rich episode shines a light on who’s winning and who’s hurting in Australia’s current economic climate.

The Income Illusion

The average taxable income is $74,240, but the median is just $55,868 – that $18K gap reveals how averages can hide the real story.

Add to that a $24K gender pay gap and you start to see the full picture on affordability and inequality.

While median income is up slightly, tax paid jumped by 16.6%.

Superannuation Snapshot

This isn’t just about income, it’s about lost compounding, career breaks and structural disadvantages.

  • Median male super: $68,568
  • Median female super: $54,349

Who’s Investing?

2.26 million Australians own rental property, but 72% of investors hold just one, with only 0.85% of all investors owning six or more

Nearly half of investors (49.4%) reported a net rental loss, up from 41.9% the year before, concentrated among small-scale investors.

Tax System Realities

  • The tax system works better for those on higher incomes with smart advice – a $10K loss is far more valuable to someone earning $180K than $70K.
  • 0.2% of individuals claimed 46% of capital gains.
  • Meanwhile, many low-income investors don’t even claim depreciation
  • Women miss out disproportionately due to lower incomes, fewer property holdings, and reduced access to professional financial advice

Industry Takeaways

Success in property goes beyond property features.

You don’t need ten properties to be successful.

Understanding property metrics, tax offsets, depreciation, ownership structures and long-term planning is crucial.
