Postcode Spotlight Thorneside 4158

Thorneside is a waterside suburb which overlooks both Waterloo and Moreton Bays located 20 km east of Brisbane. Old shacks overlooking the water on the western side of Thorneside gives an atmosphere of an old fishing town with the remainder of the suburb offering mainly conventional and contemporary homes. The streets behind the esplanade are slightly undulating and this allows some properties to take in elevated views of the water.

Thorneside Village Shopping Centre is the main shopping centre for residents. There is a childcare centre next to the shopping centre but there are no schools in Thorneside. The nearest primary and high schools are in the nearby suburbs of Wellington Point and Birkdale. Thorneside is serviced by the train and bus. This suburb is very popular with families for many reasons. There is a vast sports field in the middle of the suburb which services the whole district. Facilities at the William Taylor Memorial Sportsfield include tennis and netball courts, soccer pitch and cricket ground. There is also a significant koala habitat and many walking and cycling paths in Thorneside.

Why you should buy here

    • It’s one of Brisbane’s cheapest seaside suburbs, with a median price well below that of Brisbane.
    • Access to the city is relatively easy as there is a train station.
    • It’s a short drive to the popular Wellington Point, with its picnic and boating facilities and the many alfresco cafes and restaurants on Main Rd.
    • The major shopping and entertainment facilities at Capalaba are only a five minute drive away.

Areas to focus on

So far as capital growth is concerned, the localities to focus on are streets near the water, in particular the elevated streets just back from the water which have views of the bay. The precinct near the adjacent suburb of Birkdale has better quality housing as Birkdale itself has a marina development. Homes in this estate often sell for more than one million dollars.

Areas to avoid

The western section of Thorneside is the less desirable section. The housing is of poorer quality, mangroves line the creek and the Thorneside Sewage Treatment Plant is located in this precinct. Quarry Rd and Railway Pde are busy thoroughfares best avoided.
